Passing Muster With The Village Coffee Set
I was surprised when I had an invite to pre Christmas ‘coffee and nibbles’ in my village some years ago. I was on nodding terms with the hosts – we may even have exchanged two or three words in the 20 years. So not quite exchanging terms of endearment. Yet. Anyway I was thrilled to be included in the guest list having heard from other ‘neighbours’ who had evidently met the criteria and attended. Local gossip correctly suggests you knew who has passed muster when they’e invited back the following year. Because it’s a small village those who make the grade and joyfully attend consecutively then gossip about those who’ve not. That to me is worse than not going in the first place. I scored massively by buying my hosts an exsquisite bone china coffee set with matching bon bon dish – unknown to me the hostess had been lusting after that very set for ages. Success was mine as have the repeat invites!
